DURANGO, Colo. – For the second straight game, the Colorado Mesa men's basketball team headed into an overtime period, coming from behind to take a 74-72 win over the Fort Lewis Skyhawks in Rocky Mountain Conference play.
The Mavs grab their 11
th win of the season, having yet to drop a match. Despite committing 23 turnovers, the team made up their defensive efforts winning the battle of the boards, 46-27. They scored 13 second-chance points, and continued to post a strong paint presence scoring 44 of their 74 points in the lane.
The game saw 13 lead changes, a number of within the first ten minutes of the first half. It was around the 10 minute mark when a Skyhawk 3-pointer, and a series of free throws, put the home team ahead by five.
Just as
Blaise Threatt connected on a fast break layup to tie things up at 27, FLC closed out the half with an and-one and then a dunk to lead going into the break.
As the second half got underway, the Mavs closed the deficit and took a single point lead off a free throw from
Georgie Dancer. The Skyhawks converted on their next possession, and continued to pick up momentum getting ahead by as many as 10.
With 1:56 to go,
Ethan Menzies found the net to give the team a 67-65 edge. Fort Lewis's Will Wittman put in a layup to tie things up at 67. Neither team was able to convert on their final possessions, sending the game into extra minutes.
CMU struck first in the overtime period, with the teams trading turns at the foul line.
Reece Johnson gave CMU a two-point lead, and with a second to play
Trevor Baskin captured the offensive rebound to secure the victory.
Georgie Dancer recorded a career-high 26-points on the night. He finished 8=of-15 from the floor, 2-of-3 from deep, and 8-of-10 at the foul line, while adding five rebounds and a pair of steals.

Ethan Menzies tallied his second straight double-double, third of the season, with a 19-point and 12-rebound performance. The sophomore went 6-of-10 from the field, and 7-of-8 in free throws, and added two blocks and a steal on the night.
Blaise Threatt was the third Mav in double-figures with 11-points. The freshman also pulled down five rebounds and two steals in the win.
The Mavs will continue on to Gunnison for a meeting with rival Western State, tomorrow in Paul Wright Gymnasium. Game time has been moved up to a 6 p.m. start time.
