Gunnison, Colo. – On their second leg of this weekend's road trip, the Colorado Mesa men's basketball suffered their first loss of the season, falling to the Western State Mountaineers 78-72 in conference action.
The Mavs kept it close throughout, but were unable to quiet the Mountaineers offense who tallied 12, 3-pointers to Mesa's seven. Mesa shot 54.5 percent from the field, and had twice as many opportunities at the free throw line than their opponent.
Christopher Speller and
Reece Johnson led the scoring attack with 19 and 16 points respectively.
Ethan Menzies was the third Mavs to finish in double-figures with 10-points. He and
Mac Riniker added 7-rebounds a piece to lead the defensive efforts.
The loss snaps a 14-game win streak that dates back to last season's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.
The team will have a quick turnaround, returning home to host the Westminster Griffins on Tuesday at 7:30 pm in Brownson Arena.
