SALT LAKE CITY— Colorado Mesa University's
Lily Borgenheimer continued her fine form, winning both the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke to lead the Maverick swimming and diving teams in a Saturday dual at NCAA Division I Utah.
The Mavericks women also posted three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference-leading swims, including a new NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time and runner-up finish from freshman
Elsa Huebsch in the 100 back, but were overpowered by the deep Utes, 176-67.
Lauren White also set a RMAC-leading and NCAA "B" cut 100 free time as the lead-off leg on the Mavs' RMAC-pacing 400 free relay squad.
Meanwhile, the Maverick men recorded four runner-up finishes as
Ammar Hassan registered two, both with NCAA Championship qualifying diving marks for the second straight day.
Torsten Rau also extended his RMAC lead in the 1000 free as he and
Mahmoud Elgayar (200 IM) joined Hassan as second place finishers.
Utah won the men's dual, 191-52.
Borgenheimer, who bettered her own school-record in the 200 breaststroke in a Friday event win at BYU, claimed the 200 IM on Saturday in two minutes, 5.76 seconds. She then came back to take the 100 breast in 1:02.88. Both were under the NCAA "B" cut standards, but off her school-record and RMAC-leading season-bests.
Meanwhile, Huebsch posted a fine "B" cut time of 56.39 (56.29-altiduted adjusted) seconds to extend her RMAC lead and move into fourth in Maverick history for that discipline.
In the relay, White,
Katerina Matoskova,
Maddie Pressler and
Logan Anderson also recorded a RMAC-leading and runner-up finishing time of 3:31.06 (3:30.66-adjusted). White went out in 52.09 (51.99-adjusted) seconds, eclipsing the provisional qualifying standard of 52.11.
Other highlights included third place finishes from
Grace Payton and White in the 100 fly and 100 free respectively. Payton finished in 58.88 seconds while White touched in 53.26 (53.16-adjusted) seconds, which was her season best until her relay leadoff.
Robyn Naze, a double-winner and RMAC-leader on Friday, also turned in a pair of third place finishes in the 500 (5:10.06) and 1000 free (10:42.12). Matoskova was just behind her in the 500 free, placing fourth in 5:17.00 (5:12.00), which ranks her third in the conference.
In the men's dual, Hassan registered 6-dive scores of 315.23 (1-meter) and 303.98 (3-meter) points. Diving teammates
Chandler Livingston and
Tanner Belliston also finished fourth on those respective boards.
Meanwhile, Rau posted the fastest time in the RMAC this season, finishing in 9:48.50 (9:37.10-adjusted).
Logan Ellis was third in 9:54.11 (9:40.01-adjusted), which is also a season-best that puts him second in the conference.
Elgayar finished the 200 IM in 1:54.66 while
Ben Sampson,
Lane Austin each recorded third place finishes. Sampson completed the 100 free in a season-best 46.11 (46.01-adjusted) seconds while Austin finished the 100 back, an event he leads the RMAC, in 50.37 seconds.
Saturday's meet was the final scheduled dual of the abbreviated season for the Mavericks. The women went 3-7 with all seven losses coming to Division I opponents. They were a perfect 3-0 in RMAC contests. CMU's men had just two duals, both of which were this weekend. They went 0-2 falling after falling to BYU on Friday.
The Mavericks will now begin preparations for the RMAC Championships, which they will host, beginning on Feb. 17. Both Maverick squads will be looking for their third straight conference crowns.
