GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – With fans in the stands, the Maverick men's basketball team put on a show tonight, winning an 81-80 overtime thriller over the visiting Regis Rangers to push their record to 10-0 on the season.
Ethan Menzies put up a quick four points early, which was just a preview of what was to come for the rest of the half for him.
Regis would takeover the lead on a jumper near the 8-minute mark, but a three from
David Rico put the Mavs back on top. Menzies would get the crowd roaring with not one but TWO dunks, getting up and over the Rangers defender.
A turnaround jumper from
Christopher Speller gave CMU their largest lead at 8. Regis sank a 3-pointer to pull within three, but
Jared Small chucked up a last second shot finding the net for a 6-point edge at the half.
Menzies notched 15-points in the first half alone, on 7-for-8 shooting to go along with eight boards. The Mavs established their presence in the paint early, with 26 of their 35 first half points coming from inside the lane.
With the second half underway, the Mavs started to increase their lead getting up to double-digits off a pair of free throws from
Reece Johnson.
Mac Riniker got in on the dunk game, grabbing the steal and taking it to the basket with authority, while also drawing the foul, helping the Mavs stay ahead.
Whenever CMU knocked down a three, the Rangers would respond with a couple of their own closing in on the deficit. With time winding down, Regis' Troy Brady connected from deep giving his team a 69-66 edge.
Jared Small however banked a three of his own to tie things up and force extra minutes.
As the overtime period got underway,
Georgie Dancer chipped in four points to put his team ahead.
Brian Dawson found the basket just outside the paint, to put the Rangers up by one with less than thirty remaining.
With the last possession,
Jared Small found an opening and put in a layup for the 81-80 score in favor of CMU. Dawson put up a last second attempt, but would come up short as the buzzer went off, solidifying the win for the Mavs.
Ethan Menzies tallied a double-double with 21-points and 10 boards, along with two blocks.
Jared Small came in clutch for CMU, putting in 16-points with 4-for-6 from deep.
Blaise Threatt added 12-points, while
