No. 15 Mavs Defeat Davenport 15-7 to Remain Undefeated

Mavericks tie a program best start to the season with six wins

PUEBLO, Colo. – In a neutral site game held at Gonzales Stadium Thursday night, the nationally ranked Maverick men's lacrosse team (6-0, 2-0) defeated Davenport University (0-4) 15-7 to remain undefeated with a perfect 6-0 record.

This win matched the program's best start to a season which occurred in 2018 when the Mavericks began the season 6-0. A win on Sunday against No. 11 Rockhurst would mark the best start in program history.

The Mavericks dominated the Panthers in every category, outshooting them 62-23, grabbing more than twice as many ground balls (37-17), and winning 20 of the 26 face offs. Two-time RMAC Defensive Player of the Week Cole Emmanuel won 17-of-22 face offs and picked up a game high 14 ground balls.

Freshman AJ Switzer led the Mavericks with three goals and one assist. The Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif, native has now recorded multiple goals in the previous four games. He recorded a team high ten shots and put seven on goal which was a career high.

Freshman Drew Eickelman had a great defensive performance causing one turnover and picking up three ground balls while recorded the second goal of his career. Deandre Ross and Christian Cherry led the team with two caused turnovers each.

Cherry served all 60 minutes in the net and recorded a season high 11 saves.

Two of Switzer's goals were recorded on man-up opportunities while the Mavs scored on three of their seven extra man opportunities.

Graduate transfer, James Booth led the team in assists with three. He has recorded two or more assists in every game this season.

Switzer recorded the first goal of the game on a man up opportunity which was assisted by Booth to take and early 1-0 lead. Davenport answered with two consecutive goals before the Mavericks closed the first quarter on a 3-0 run that led into the second quarter. Emmanuel started the second quarter with a face off win that led right into a goal giving the Mavericks a 4-2 lead with 14:52 remaining.

The Mavericks went on to outscore the Panthers 6-2 and held a 10-4 lead with 11:28 remaining in the third quarter. Davenport recorded back-to-back goals before Trent Pernell capitalized on a man up opportunity to record his sixth goal of the season.
