No. 22 Mavericks Secure Win Over Black Hills State

Spearfish, S.D. – On the road for the first time this season, the Colorado Mesa men's basketball faced off with the Yellow Jackets of Black Hills State on night one, coming away with a 75-70 victory to improve to 3-0 on the young season.

The win also snaps a two-game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets, and marks the first time since 2014 that the Mavericks stole a win in Spearfish.

Trailing most of the night, the Mavericks would come close but could not close the gap. It wasn't until the five-minute mark in the second half, when Christopher Speller drove to basket grabbing the layup and the foul. With the and-one, the Mavs tied it up at 60.

Reece Johnson would then convert off of a BHSU turnover, finding the net from deep to give CMU their first lead of the night. Trevor Baskin contributed another three with two and half minutes left to play to give the team some edge.

The Mavs would go 4-for-4 in free throws in the last minute of play to secure the win.

Georgie Dancer made his season debut tonight, going a perfect 10-for-10 in free throws. He finished the night with 12-points.

Speller led the Mavs scoring efforts going 6-for-7 from the field, and 5-for-5 from the foul line for 17-points. He also chipped in three assists, and three steals. Trevor Baskin followed up with 14-points of his own, shooting 6-for-10 from the floor, along with a pair of the three-pointers.

The dynamic duo of Joel Scott and Trey Whitley led the way for the Yellow Jackets, contributing 23 and 25 points, respectively, on the night.

The team will make their way to Chadron State to take on the Eagles, tomorrow Dec. 12 and 7:30 p.m. in the Chicoine Center.
