Chadron, Neb. – It took two overtime periods, but the Colorado Mesa men's basketball team came out on top, 77-68, over Chadron State, Saturday night in the Chicoine Center.
The teams traded leads throughout, until about midway through the first half when CSC went up 17-14. The Eagles would string together six three-pointers in the opening frame to lead 33-28 going into the break.
It was around the 12-minute mark in the second half when the Mavs took over the lead on a layup from
Ethan Menzies. Just as the Mavs started to pull away, Chadron's Brady Delimont connected on their team's only three-pointer of the second half. With just 10-seconds remaining the Eagles converted off of a Maverick turnover to tie the game at 56 and force the first over time period.
With the lead going into the final minute of the period, yet again the Eagles connected from beyond the arc to tie the game at 65. They would attempt another just before the buzzer, but fell short.
It was all CMU in the second overtime period, out scoring their opponent 12-3, going 3-of-5 from the field and 6-of-8 in free throws to seal the win.
Ethan Menzies led all scorers with 22-points, going 9-for-12 from the floor. On the defensive end, he pulled down eight rebounds, along with three steals and a block.
Mac Riniker chipped in 16-points, five rebounds and a pair of steals.
Reece Johnson added 12-points, while going 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
Georgie Dancer rounded out the Mavs in double-digits with 10-points, in addition to dishing out five assists.
Deion Rhea did it all for the Eagles scoring 17-points, to go along with seven rebounds.
Saturday's win makes it four straight for the Mavericks. Their road slate will continue next weekend, this time staying in state to take on Adams State and CSU Pueblo.
