ST. GEORGE, Utah – Colorado Mesa trailed by as many 15 points in the second half and came roaring back in the half but the comeback came up just short in a 74-68 win for Dixie State on Friday evening in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup.
The Mavericks trailed 52-37 with 14:20 to play in the second half but they came storming back to take a 63-62 lead with 4:06 to play after a
Michael Skinner layup.
Dixie State outscored the Mavericks 11-6 in the final four minutes to seal the win. Trailblazer Jack Pagenkopf had 10 of his game-high 21 points in that four minute stretch including a pair of three-pointers.
A week after making 18 three-pointers, the Mavericks went 0-for-7 from the arc in the first half tonight and finished 4-for-16 in the game.
Ethan Richardson gave his best effort to keep the score close. The junior finished with 21 points, tying Pagenkopf for the game-high, on 8-of-9 shooting from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.
Jared Small was the only other Maverick to finish in double-digits with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor.
The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks will head north for a matchup with Westminster on Saturday night at 7:30pm. The Griffins took on Western Colorado on Friday night and came away with a win.
