LAKEWOOD, Colo. – A late goal in the 79th minute lifts the Mavericks past Colorado Christian University on Sunday afternoon at the Trailblazer stadium. Sophomore Tristan Widic recorded the third game winning goal of his career in this win. The Mavericks improved to 5-1-1 on the season and 3-0-1 against RMAC opponents.
Colorado Christian helped the Mavericks in this win scoring an own goal during the first half to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. The Cougars tied the goal in the 70th minute but Widic recorded his first goal of the season to secure the Maverick's win. Aaron Martinez assisted the game winning goal and recorded his second assist this year.
The Mavericks are now on a three game winning streak, which they will take home into next weekend when they return to Walker Field to play Dixie State and Westminster.
As a reserve Ramses Atahualpa led the Mavericks with four shots and one shot on goal. Lawan Abary led the Mavericks in shots on goal with two. He recorded three total shots throughout the game.
In the first half, the Mavericks recorded seven shots and limited the Cougars to none. Senior goalkeeper Brenden Brown recorded zero saves for the first time in his career, as the Mavericks defense was all over the Cougars only allowing them to take three shots through the game that all occurred in the second half.
