GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks improved to 4-0-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Friday night after defeating Dixie State 1-0. Senior goalkeeper Brendan Brown recorded nine saves all in the second half of this match to shutout the Trailblazers who had scored 10 goals against RMAC opponents prior to this match. Brown recorded three saves in the final two minutes of the game to secure the win including a penalty kick save.
The Mavericks committed a foul with less than two minutes remaining that resulted in a Trailblazer penalty kick. Brown stopped Moises Medina's original shot however the Mavs were guilty of a violation, which allowed for a retake by Idris Alabi, Brown also came up with a save on that to secure the Maverick win.
In the 83rd minute, the Mavericks made multiple substitutions, which resulted in a goal since Tristan Widic scored within the same minute he entered the game as a reserve. Nick Rizzo was also part of the substitution and took the corner kick that set up Widic for the game winning goal.
Widic has now scored in back-to-back matches and has collect four career goals all of which are tabbed as game winning. Rizzo's assist was the first of this season and fourth of his career.
After Friday night's RMAC matches the Mavericks jumped ahead of Westminster for the third place spot as the Griffins suffered their first loss of the RMAC season to Fort Lewis College, 1-0.
The Griffins will travel to Grand Junction this Sunday for a match at 1:30 pm on Walker Field.
