GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University men's soccer team (6-1-2, 4-0-2) tied with the Westminster Griffins 1-1 on Sunday at Walker Field. Lawan Abary scored his second goal of this season in the second half to tie the score 1-1 after the Griffins scored in the 17th minute of the match.
The Maverick reserves were active off the bench taking five shots. As a team the Mavericks took nine shots and six shots on goal. Abary led the team with two shots on goal. Nick Rizzo, Alec Fronapfel, and Aaron Martinez all took on target shots but were denied by Will Desantis who recorded five saves.
Brendan Brown, the Mavericks starting goalkeeper, recorded four saves including one in the second overtime to stop the Griffins from a game winning goal.
The Mavericks will play two games next weekend on the road against Regis University and UCCS. On Friday October 11 at 3 pm the Mavericks will face Regis on the Regis Match Pitch and on Sunday October 13 the Mavericks will play against UCCS at 2:30 pm on the Mountain Lion Field.
