Mavericks crush visiting Tigers to finish fall with winning team record

ITA West Regional up next for streaking Mavs

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team made quick work of the visiting Colorado College Tigers dropping just one full set and one match in a convincing 6-1 team victory on Saturday afternoon at the Elliott Tennis Center.

The Mavericks improved to 4-3 overall with the victory and went 2-0 on the weekend, their only home stand of the fall season.  They will take that team record into the spring but will compete as individuals and with some momentum in next week's ITA West Regional Championships in Azusa, California, which get underway Thursday.

In Saturday's victory, the Mavericks swept the three doubles matches against the Division III Tigers (0-4), who had dropped a 7-0 decision to Dixie State earlier in the morning.  The Mavericks dropped just four total games in doubles as Kirsten Kirby and Laura Alsing won a 6-0 decision over Sydney Vine and Tess Rubin at No. 1 before Carolena Campos and Lauren Thomas won a 6-2 decision at No. 3.  Rebecca Osterberg and Maike Waldburger then won by the same margin at No. 2 doubles to claim their fifth straight doubles victory.

The momentum continued into singles as Waldburger capped a 4-0 weekend with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jenna McDonald at No. 5 after clinching the Mavs' 5-2 victory over Dixie State (3-3) on Friday.

Thomas then defeated Haley Caspersen, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 singles before Kirby rolled to her seventh consecutive singles win by a 6-3, 6-4 margin over Vine in the top flight.

Osterberg, who defeated Olivia Dicks, 6-3, 6-2 and Campos, who took down Lilly Schmachtenberg, 6-3, 6-0, were also individual victors in the middle of the lineup for the Mavericks.

Rubin was the Tigers' lone victory.  She dropped the opening set to Alsing, 6-2 at No. 2 singles but came back to win the second 6-4 before winning a match tie-breaker 10-8, which was meaningless to the overall dual.

The younger Mavericks also won exhibition matches.  Freshman Halle Romero and redshirt sophomore Alexi Klabunde combined for a 6-1 doubles win before both blanked their opponents in singles matches.  Freshmen Ashley Lundstrom and Kelsey Hardsocg also both won 6-0 sets against CC's Emily Faulks.
