AZUSA, Calif.— Colorado Mesa University senior
Kristen Kirby advanced to the Round of 16 in the women's singles draw of the ITA West Regional Championships, highlighting an otherwise difficult day for the Colorado Mesa University tennis teams on Thursday here at Azusa Pacific University's Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex and nearby Biola University and Citrus College.
Kirby, now 9-1 and on an 8-match winning streak moved on to the second round by default and then outlasted Courtney Page of the host Cougar squad, 6-2, 3-6, 10-6. The unseeded Maverick will face No. 6 seed Becky Chou of UC-San Diego on Friday morning.
The other four Maverick women in the draw all lost their first round matches.
In men's singles, freshman
Tyler Landen won his opening match over Giuliano Maderner of Concordia-Irvine by a 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 10-4 margin but then defaulted his Round of 32 match to No. 6 seed Jesse Haas of APU.
Meanwhile, senior
Mitchell Steadman received a bye in the opening round but was also defeated in three sets by No. 5 seed Marc Isaia of UC-San Diego in the round of 32. The Mavericks' other five players all lost in the opening round.
The Maverick men did claim two doubles wins as
Steven Howe and Landen bested a pair from Point Loma Nazarene, 8-2 before falling to APU's Sam Sippel and Jakob Schnaitter in the round of 16.
CMU's
Christian Albrechtsen and
Thiago Nejm won their opening match 8-3 over Biola's Quentin Lau and Caleb Bloemhof but where then defeated by APU's Haas and Leyton Bohren, 8-4 in the round of 16.
Each of CMU's three women's doubles teams were defeated in the opening round.
Maverick redshirt freshman
Lauren Thomas did pick up a singles win in the separate Cougar Open draw, which was played at Citrus College. She convincingly defeated Grace Gorges of Concordia-Irvine, 6-0, 6-3 in the quarterfinal round of that 8-player bracket and will face Cal State-LA's Berta Acero in the semifinals on Friday morning.
The rest of the Mavericks will be involved in consolation singles play on Friday.
