GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University Volleyball Coach
Dave Fleming announced that Maddi Foutz, formerly of Division I volleyball power Colorado State University, has joined the Maverick program as a transfer for the upcoming 2019 season.
She will have two years of indoor eligibility remaining after helping the Rams win MWC (Mountain West Conference) titles in both 2017 and 2018.
A native of Bayfield, Foutz is a 5-foot-5 defensive specialist and libero and is the daughter of Mike and Terene Foutz. Her mother was an award-winning player for the Mavericks in the 1990s and was her Bayfield and Four Corners Volleyball Club coach.
"We are thrilled that Maddi will be joining us this fall. We have a great relationship with Terene and have watched Maddi grow up from a 10-year-old camper to a very good D1 student-athlete," Fleming said.
While at CSU, Foutz earned MW Academic All-Conference honors in both of her seasons with the Rams, who went a combined 52-12 while advancing to the NCAA Tournament in both seasons.
In 2018, Foutz started all 31 matches, mainly as a defensive specialists, totaling 263 digs in 112 sets (2.35/set). She was in double-figures in eight matches and had a career-high 25 digs on Aug. 25 at Northern Colorado, which was the second highest total in CSUy history for a 3-set match. She also had 31 service aces throughout the campaign, second most on the squad.
As a freshman in 2017, Foutz played in 32 matches, making 12 starts. She had 178 total digs, including a season-high 13 digs in her collegiate debut against Duke and had four other double-figure efforts while averaging 1.59 digs per set. She also recorded 16 service aces.
While in high school and an outside hitter and defensive specialist, she was a 4-year letterwinner for the Bayfield Wolverines and was on the AVCA Under Armour All-America watch list for 2016 after receiving Intermountain League Player of the Year honors as both a junior (2015) and senior (2016). She also participated in the USA Volleyball High Performance Program for five years and competed internationally, winning the Gold Championship at the EU Global Challenge in Croatia.
She was also a 4-year letterwinner in basketball and track.
She will major in health & exercise science at CMU and wants to become an occupational therapist.
"Maddi brings contagious energy to the gym and has a great knowledge and love of the game. It will be hard to keep her off the floor as a Libero or DS. With the graduation of
Taylor Woods, there are big shoes to fill. Kerstin (Layman) and Emily (Tucker) have been doing a great job this spring and Maddi will make this group better," Fleming commented about her potential role with the Mavericks.
