GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Senior
Hunter Douglas belted two home runs to help lead the No. 1 Colorado Mesa baseball team to a 9-4 win over the Dixie State Trailblazers on Friday evening at Suplizio Field.
Douglas hit the first of his two bombs in the bottom of the third inning, a two-run shot to right field. The home run hit the top of the wall and bounced over to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead they would never relinquish.
Later in the inning, freshman
Haydn McGeary hit a two-run jack to right center field that hit the netting in front of the scoreboard and gave Colorado Mesa a 4-0 lead. The home run was McGeary's eighth of the season.
Douglas' second home run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning, a solo homer to the deepest part of the park in left center field, giving CMU an 8-1 lead. The home runs in the game give the Lubbock, Texas native 12 on the season.
Douglas was the lone Maverick with double-digit hits, finishing 4-for-5 with two runs scored and five runs driven in.
Garrett Hutson earned the win on the mound to move to 9-1 on the season. Hutson allowed one run on three hits, walked three and struck out 10. It was the fifth time this season that Hutson struck out 10 or more and first since the start against Adams State.
The win gives the Mavericks 10 straight wins over Dixie State that dates back to February 7, 2017 in St. George.
Colorado Mesa moves their record to 40-8 on the season and gives them seven straight 40-win seasons. The Mavericks went 39-16 during the 2012 season but won the RMAC Title and competed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Mavericks and Trailblazers will close out the regular season tomorrow with a doubleheader that begins at Noon from Suplizio Field.
