SAN ANGELO, Texas – A game that most thought would turn into an offensive affair proved to be the exact opposite.
Johnny Carr's bases loaded, walk-off single in the bottom of the 11
th inning was all it took as the No. 1 Colorado Mesa Mavericks defeated No. 4 Angelo State 1-0 in game one of the NCAA South Central Super Region Tournament at Foster Field.
In the 11
th inning,
Spencer Bramwell led off the inning with a single to center field followed by a botched bunt play by Angelo State where an errant throw allowed Bramwell to advance to third base on
Caleb Farmer's bunt.
Chase Hamilton was intentionally walked to load the bases for
Haydn McGeary. McGeary had an infield fielder choice before Carr stepped to the plate to deliver the walk-off hit.
Carr finished the game 3-for-4 with a double.
The two teams entered the game ranked in the top-six in nearly every major offensive category nationally but it was the pitchers that people will talk about in the end of this game.
Colorado Mesa (49-9) started the young righthander
Andrew Morris on the mound while Angelo State countered with Trent Baker.
Morris was outstanding in his start, pitching seven shutout innings. The freshman gave up two hits, walked one and struck out three before giving way to his bullpen. He carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a leadoff single to Michael Urquidi.
The Rams (45-10) best chance to score may have come in the eighth inning. With runners at first and third with nobody out, Maverick closer entered the game for
JR McDermott. Dixon induced a lineout double play to
Jordan Stubbings at first base. He then intentionally walked National Player of the Year candidate Josh Elvir and struck out Lachlan Mayo to end the threat.
The pitching staff limited Elvir to an 0-for-2 performance with two intentional walks late in the game. The junior entered the series batting .464 with 17 doubles and 19 home runs.
Dixon earned the win in extended relief, pitching the final four innings. The senior allowed just two hits, walked two and struck out two to move his season record to 2-0. The Highlands Ranch native also dropped his ERA to a miniscule 0.49.
It was the second time this season Angelo State was shutout, dropping a 4-0 decision to West Texas A&M at Wilder Park in Canyon back on March 31. It was the first time they had been shutout at home since May 21, 2017, a 4-0 loss to Colorado Mesa in the NCAA South Central Regional. The Mavericks are the only team to shutout the Rams at Foster Field since 2014.
Angelo State's Trent Baker was equally impressive. Baker pitched seven and a third shutout innings and allowed just four hits, walked one and tied his season-high with eight strikeouts. Baker struck out four of the first six batters he faced in the game.
Baker didn't allow a hit until a McGeary single in the bottom of the third inning.
McGeary finished the game 2-for-5.
Colorado Mesa is now just one win away from advancing to the NCAA National Championships in Cary, N.C. The two teams will play game two of the Super Regional tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon at 3:30pm CST at Foster Field.
