SAN ANGELO, Texas – It took all three games of the NCAA Super Regionals but the top-ranked Colorado Mesa Mavericks are headed back to the NCAA Division II National Championships after a 3-2 thrilling victory over No. 4 Angelo State in game three of the NCAA South Central Super Regional Tournament at Foster Field.
Colorado Mesa took the early 2-0 lead after the first inning after
Caleb Farmer and
Jordan Stubbings each delivered RBI hits. Farmer singled to center field, scoring
Spencer Bramwell while
Jordan Stubbings ripped a double to right center, scoring Farmer on the play.
The Mavericks added an important insurance run in the third inning as Stubbings singled through the left side scoring Bramwell to make it 3-0. The sophomore finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
The score would remain that way until the eighth inning when Angelo State would make their run. National Player of the Year candidate Josh Elvir laced a RBI single to right field to get the Rams to within two at 3-1.
In the ninth inning, Nick Seginowich led off with a triple to right center and Lachlan Mayo scored him on a RBI groundout to cut the lead to 3-2.
Senior
Will Dixon got an infield pop-up and struck the final batter of the game for his NCAA Division II leading 15
th save of the season.
Dixon allowed one run on one hit and struck out one in the final inning and two-thirds of the game. He entered with runners on first and third with one out in the eighth inning and induced a 4-6-3 double play that saved a run and preserved the 3-1 lead.
The senior relieved junior
Trevin Reynolds who was flat out dominant for the third straight week. Reynolds (5-1) allowed one run on five hits, walked none and struck out nine in seven and a third innings of work.
With the win, Colorado Mesa's record moves to 50-10 on the season. It is the second time in the program's history that they achieved 50 wins with the last time coming in the 2017 season.
Earlier in the day, the Mavericks dropped a 9-8 decision to the Rams after fighting back to tie the game at 8-8 and actually led 5-4 in the seventh inning.
Angelo State got a two-out, go-ahead single from Seginowich in the eighth to take the lead for good.
Colorado Mesa got home runs from
Hunter Douglas,
Dominic DeMarco and
Caleb Farmer but it wasn't enough.
The Mavericks will be making their fourth trip to the NCAA National Championships and their third trip to Cary. The last time the Mavericks were in Cary, they dropped a 3-2 decision to Southern Indiana in the National Championship game.
Colorado Mesa competed in the 2017 National Championships that were held in Grand Prairie, Texas. The Mavericks dropped a pair of one-run games including one to eventual National Champion West Chester 1-0 in the National Semifinals.
The Mavericks opponent will be announced sometime on Sunday after the NCAA National Committee meets to re-seed the final eight teams.
