PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball answered the call in a big way on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader from their rivals, the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves.
In the opening game of the day, the Mavericks (27-6, 15-4 RMAC) scored multiple runs in three innings leading to a 10-4 win over the ThunderWolves (16-16, 11-8 RMAC) in game two of the series.
The Maverick hitters were able to chase CSU-Pueblo starting pitcher Josh Dahl after three plus innings of work and tagging him with the loss. Dahl allowed seven runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out one after entering the game with the second most strikeouts in the RMAC.
Chase Hamilton finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a run driven in. He was just a home run shy of the cycle.
Senior
Dominic DeMarco went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five runs driven in. His two-run triple in the top of the fourth inning broke the game open for Colorado Mesa.
Jett Wodiuk picked up the win in relief of
Trevin Reynolds. Wodiuk (2-0) allowed just two hits in two-thirds of an inning pitched.
Reynolds pitched well in his first collegiate start, allowing four runs on four hits, walked two and struck out one. He didn't factor into the decision.
Will Dixon pitched the final two and two-thirds innings to earn his fourth save of the season. He allowed just four hits and struck out four in 41 pitches thrown.
In the nightcap,
Jordan Stubbings' three-run home run to left field in the top of the seventh broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Mavericks the 5-2 win over the ThunderWolves.
Stubbings finished the game 2-for-4 with four runs driven in.
Colorado Mesa fell behind 2-0 after the first inning and didn't threaten again until the top of the sixth inning where they tied the game at 2-2. The Mavericks led off the inning with four consecutive hits by Reynolds, DeMarco,
Haydn McGeary, and Stubbings that tied the game.
Garrett Hutson pitched the complete game to earn the win. Hutson (6-0) allowed two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out eight in 99 pitches in the outing. Hutson induced a game-ending 4-6-3 double play to close out the win.
The two rivals will close out the series tomorrow with a single nine-inning game that begins at noon from Rawlings Field.
