DENVER, Colo. – The No. 1 Colorado Mesa baseball team completed the improbable comeback in a 14-13 win over the MSU Denver Roadrunners on Friday evening to open a crucial four game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series at the Regency Athletic Complex.
The Mavericks trailed 10-2 entering the fifth inning before they mounted the comeback. They scored three runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth before tallying single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Freshman
Haydn McGeary got the comeback started in the fifth inning with a three-run jack to left center that cut the Roadrunner lead to 10-5.
They took the lead for good in the top of the ninth.
Hunter Douglas scored the game-tying run on a wild pitch. Two pitches later,
Caleb Farmer delivered a solo home run to left field as the go-ahead run, making it 14-13. The home run was Farmer's second of the game.
The sophomore finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four runs driven in. His first home run came in the first inning, a two-run shot that gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.
Freshman reliever
Gage Edwards kept the Mavericks in the game. Edwards allowed just a walk and struck out one in an inning and two-thirds.
Staff ace
JR McDermott pitched the final two and a third innings and allowed just one run over that time. McDermott (7-0) allowed one run on two hits, walked two and struck out six while earning the win.
MSU Denver slugger Matt Malkin hit two home runs and moved his season total to an RMAC leading 23.
Colorado Mesa moved its record to 35-8 on the season and 23-6 in the conference. The Mavericks remain two games up of Colorado School of Mines while MSU Denver moved to four games back of first place.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1pm.
