Dominic DeMarco drove in six runs combined to power the No. 1 Colorado Mesa baseball team to a 10-1 win over the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys on Saturday afternoon at Suplizio Field.
Villafuerte, making his first collegiate start, had a day at the plate. The Fountain Valley, Calif. native went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three runs driven in. He hit his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, a three-run shot to left field that put the Mavericks up 7-0 at the time.
DeMarco had an equally impressive day at the plate. The senior went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs driven in. He hit his seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning, a two-run homer to right center field.
Jordan Stubbings blasted a solo home run in the third inning to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead. The home run was the sophomore's seventh of the season.
Trevin Reynolds got the start on the mound for Colorado Mesa and had another steady performance. Reynolds (2-1) allowed one run on six hits, walked two and struck out five in five innings of work.
Three relievers combined to pitch four shutout innings of relief. They allowed three hits while striking out five.
JR McDermott fired the ninth inning and allowed two hits and struck out two in 15 pitches.
Colorado Mesa improves to 33-8 on the season and 22-6 in the conference. They maintained their three-game lead on MSU Denver and are keeping an eye out on Colorado School of Mines who is just two and a half games out pending the final result of their game today with Colorado Christian.
The Mavericks will travel to Denver next weekend to play the MSU Denver Roadrunners at Regency Athletic Complex beginning on Friday at 6pm.
