Freshman Duo lead Mavericks to Doubleheader Sweep of Adams

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 2 Colorado Mesa baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Adams State Grizzlies on Saturday afternoon at Suplizio Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

In the first game, the Mavericks had a big inning on three different occasions in an 11-4 win over the Grizzlies. Colorado Mesa had five double in the game and swiped three bases.

Colorado Mesa starter Garrett Hutson earned the win on the mound after firing five innings. Hutson (7-0) allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, walked three and struck out 10 while throwing 98 pitches. It is his fourth outing of the season where the senior has struck out 10 or more.

Tanner Garner and Caleb Farmer each recorded three hits in the game. Garner went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two runs driven in and two doubles while Farmer went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs driven in.

Josh Shaprio, Jordan Stubbings, and Spencer Bramwell all had two hits apiece. Bramwell drove in three runs as well.

In the night cap, freshman Andrew Morris fired a complete-game, one-hit shutout in an 11-0 win over Adams State to close out the day.

Morris (1-1) allowed just a second inning single while walking one and striking out a season-high 11 batters while throwing just 80 pitches. He retired the final 12 batters he faced in order including striking out six of the final nine batters.

The freshman got all the run support he needed after the first batter of the game for Colorado Mesa. Dominic DeMarco launched the first pitch he saw over the fence in right field for his sixth home run of the season.

Josh Shapiro launched his first home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning, a two-run bomb to right field.

Garner, a freshman from Broomfield, continued his hot day with a 3-for-3 performance in game two of the day. He was just inches from his first home run as it hit off the very top of the wall in left field. He settled for a triple which scored Tyler Sandoval on the play.

The Mavericks improved their record to 30-7 on the season and 18-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. It is the 16th straight season the Mavericks have reached the 30-win mark with the last season coming in 2003 that they didn't reach that mark.

The two teams will close out the series tomorrow afternoon with a single nine-inning game at Noon at Suplizio Field.
