Mavericks Fall to Tough Tampa Team, 19-6

TAMPA, Fla. – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks were defeated 19-6 by the University of Tampa who beat the Mavs in every category including shots, clears, ground balls, faceoffs, and extra man opportunities. The Mavericks scored a season low six goals and gave up a season high 19 goals.

Carson Schwark recorded his first goal of the season while freshmen Matt Funkhouser led the team with two goals. Jack Griffin recorded a goal for the sixth straight.

The Mavericks battled in the first quarter and tied up each of Tampa's two goals, but never could gain an advantage on the Spartans. The Spartans closed the first quarter with three straight goals and led 5-2. In the next quarter Joe Wulforst IV and Funkhouser recorded back-to-back goals, but it was no match for the seven goals the Spartans recorded to give themselves a 12-4 lead at the half.

In an attempt to dig themselves out of a hole the Mavericks took advantage of a man up opportunity and Griffin found the net to give the Mavericks their fifth goal of the game, however the Spartans never let up and they closed the third quarter on a 4-0 run.

Schwark recorded his first goal of the season on a man up opportunity to open up the final quarter, but the Spartans' lead was too much for the Mavericks and they were able to score two more times and end the game with a 19-6 lead.

The Mavericks record fell to 4-3 while the Spartans improved to 5-4.
