Mavericks Sweep Twinbill from #9 Orediggers

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 5 Colorado Mesa baseball team swept the Saturday doubleheader from the No. 9 Colorado School of Mines Orediggers to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the series with one game to play.

In game one of the doubleheader, Chase Hamilton's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh gave Colorado Mesa the 4-3 win in game two of the series over the Orediggers.

The Mavericks were down to their final out in the game but Dominic DeMarco's pinch-hit single extended the game. Freshman Tanner Garner came into pinch run for DeMarco and scored the tying run on Matt Turner's double down the right field line. Garner ran through the stop sign of third base coach Steve Woytek as he came around third base but was still able to score on a high throw from right fielder Phil VanZale.

Turner and Trevin Reynolds each had two hits in the game with Reynolds' two hits going for doubles.

Reliever AJ Landis earned the win in relief of starter John Beaudrie. Landis (3-0) allowed one run on three hits and struck out three.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Mavericks and Orediggers played the first three innings of a pitcher's dual between Mines' Drew Hill and Mesa's Garrett Hutson. The Mavericks opened it up in the fourth inning, hitting two home runs on their way to an 11-0 win.

Senior Garrett Hutson pitched the complete game shutout, throwing 102 pitches. Hutson (3-0) allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out 10 and didn't allow a runner to reach third base in the win.

Senior Will Dixon and sophomore Jordan Stubbings each hit their first home runs of the season. Stubbings finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four runs driven in while Dixon was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs driven in.

Hunter Douglas belted his team-leading sixth home run to lead off the fourth inning while Spencer Bramwell hit his second home run in as many weeks with a two-run shot as part of the Mavericks six-run sixth inning.

The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow with a single nine-inning game at noon.
