Mavericks sweep double dip from Sunbirds

FRESNO, Calif. – The No. 12 Colorado Mesa baseball team continued its winning ways, sweeping a doubleheader from Fresno Pacific on Friday afternoon at FPU Diamond. The Mavericks win streak now sits at seven and their overall record moves to 10-1 on the season.

In game one of the day, the Mavericks scored two runs in the second inning and got an important insurance run in the top of the ninth inning in a 3-2 win. Colorado Mesa scored their three runs on nine hits and didn't commit any errors.

Dominic DeMarco hit his third home run of the season in the top of the second followed by an RBI single by freshman Haydn McGeary gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.

Neither team scored anything until the ninth inning when Hunter Douglas gave Colorado Mesa an insurance run with a RBI double that scored Josh Shapiro to make it 3-0.

The insurance run was needed as Sunbird Tristen Alvarez belted a two-run homer to left field to cut the Maverick lead to 3-2. Will Dixon entered the game on the mound and was able to record the final out of the game for his first save of the season.

DeMarco and Matt Turner each had two hits for the Mavericks.

Freshman Nathan Wilson earned his first collegiate start on the mound and didn't disappoint. The Fountain Valley, Calif. native pitched five shutout innings and allowed just three hits, walked four and struck out seven to earn the win.

In the night cap, Garrett Hutson fired a complete game, one-hit shutout to help the Mavericks to a 5-0 victory over the Sunbirds, ensuring the series win for Colorado Mesa.

The lone hit Hutson surrendered came in the bottom of the first inning to Brian Hefner, the Sunbird three-hole hitter. The El Dorado, Kan. native struck out 11 batters including four of the final six batters he faced in the game and faced just two batters over the minimum in the game.

McGeary finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs driven in. The Thunderbird High School product had a two-run single up the middle in the top of the third inning and added a RBI double in the top of the seventh.

The Mavericks and Sunbirds will conclude the series on Saturday with a single nine inning game at noon.
