FRESNO, Calif. – Despite being outhit 11-5 in the game, the No. 12 Colorado Mesa baseball team moved to 8-1 on the season after a 6-1 win over the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds at FPU Diamond.
The Mavericks struck early with three runs in the first and had only one-hit in the inning, benefiting from an error that helped allow the runs to score.
Johnny Carr had the lone hit in the inning, an RBI single to right field.
Colorado Mesa added two more runs in the second inning on a two-run single down the left field line by
Caleb Farmer to make it 5-0.
The Sunbirds scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it 5-1 after eight full innings.
Josh Shapiro scored the Mavericks final run in the ninth inning as he moved up to score on a wild pitch to make it 6-1.
Shapiro was the lone Maverick with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Staff ace
JR McDermott continued his string of strong outings to begin the season. The Aurora native pitched five shutout innings and allowed just six hits and struck out seven batters
Jett Wodiuk and
Andrew Morris combined to allow just one run on five hits and struck out four strikeouts. Morris picked up the save after working the final three innings of the ball game.
The two teams will continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 3pm mountain from FPU Diamond.
