GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 12 Colorado Mesa baseball team completed the four-game sweep of the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday at Suplizio Field.
In the first game of the day, the Mavericks scored 15 runs on 14 hits in a 15-5 win over Montana State Billings in game three of the series.
Senior
Garrett Hutson turned in a good outing in his first start of the season. The Abilene Christian transfer allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits, walked one and struck out 10 in five and a third innings of work. He didn't factor into the decision.
Taylor Dye earned the win in relief and moved to 2-0 on the year. Dye went two and a third innings and allowed one run on five hits and struck out two.
Freshman
Haydn McGeary finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and his first collegiate home run. The home run was a solo shot to right center that gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead in the game.
Junior
Chaz Lopez made his first start of the season and went 1-for-4 but drove in four runs while
Hunter Douglas had three hits in the game.
In the nightcap, the Mavericks scored in five of the six innings they batted in en route to a 6-3 win over the Yellowjackets.
Hunter Douglas led off the Maverick scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a solo homer that reached the bleachers in left field. The home run was Douglas' third of the season and gave CMU a 1-0 lead after one.
Douglas and
Chase Hamilton were the lone Mavericks to have multiple hits in the game. Hamilton went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two runs driven in.
John Beaudrie got the start on the mound and earned his first win of the season. Beaudrie (1-0) went five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits, walked one and struck out four in 63 pitches.
Freshman
Jahred Butler earned the save in his first collegiate appearance. Butler faced two batters getting a ground ball out and then induced a double play to end the game.
Colorado Mesa is now 7-1 on the season which is the best start to the season since 2016.
The Mavericks will hit the road for three straight weeks beginning next week when they travel to the Golden State to take on Fresno Pacific. The series begins Thursday at 7pm mountain time at FPU Diamond in Fresno, Calif.
