Mavs Fall to Regis 78-75 on Last Second Shot

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Maverick's record fell to 13-7 overall and 8-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play after a heartbreaking loss to Regis University. The Regis Rangers hit a last second three-pointer to improve to 14-6 and 11-3 in conference.

The Mavericks shot 50.8 percent (33-of-65) from the field and just 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from the three-point line. From the charity stripe the Mavs shot 75.0 percent (6-of-8). Connor Nichols led the Mavericks with 19 points (8-of-20). Damon Dubots followed with 15 points (7-of-8) and grabbed six rebounds while Tommy Nuno totaled eights point (4-of-9) and five assists. Nuno and Brandon Hoffer tied for a game high five assists.

The Rangers shot 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the field and 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from the three-point line. They were led offensively by Ryan Beisty and Tomas Auruskevicius who each totaled 17 points.

The Mavericks were outrebounded 35-33 but outscored the Rangers 52-34 in the paint. The Mavericks bench outscored the Rangers 19-7. Tonight's lineup highlighted eight different Mavericks who each scored multiple baskets. Off the bench Kenzo Nudo recorded eight points (4-of-12).

Game in Review

Regis scored the opening bucket of the game but was quickly matched by Nichols first basket of the game the next play down. The Mavericks and Rangers exchanged baskets and reached a tied game at 11 each with 17:01 remaining in the first half. There were three lead changes and two ties during the next ten minutes until the Mavs gained a 26-24 lead at the final media timeout of the first half. After this the Mavericks outscored the Rangers 14-7 and owned a 40-31 lead entering the locker room.

During the first half the Mavericks shot 50.8 percent (33-of-65) from the field.

Starting the second half the Rangers got within three points of the Mavericks, but the Mavs held a 44-39 lead at the first media timeout of the second half. After this timeout each team saw short runs, but Micheal Skinner started a 10-2 run to reach a score of 63-50 and give the Mavericks their largest lead of the game with 9:53 remaining. The Rangers inched their way back into the game and found themselves down two points with 3:04 remaining. Dubots and Nuno answered by hitting back-to-back shots to extend the Mavs lead 75-69 with under two minutes to play. In the final minute of the game the Mavericks turned the ball over and sent the Rangers to the line where they would tie the game 75-75. The Mavericks inbounded the ball and Nichols got a good look at the basket but his shot unfortunately fell too short. The Rangers pushed the ball to their front court and kicked it out for a three-pointer that found its way through the basket in the final second.

The Rangers had the final say of a game that had four lead changes and seven ties to reach a score of 75-78 in favor of Regis.
