GUNNISON, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's basketball team shot an astounding 69.8 Percent from the field to pick up their first win of the season 108-70 over Pacific Union in the first day of the Comfort Inn Classic at Paul Wright Gym.
The 69.8 field goal percentage is the highest for the Mavericks since shooting 71.7 percent in a win over Dine College on November 18, 2016 as a part of the Comfort Inn Classic.
Senior
Michael Skinner led five Mavericks in double figures with a game-high 17 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field. He was 8-of-9 from the free throw line while pulling down six rebounds and handing out four assists.
Jared Small chipped in 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting while
Georgie Dancer and
Clay Verk each had 13 points.
Tommy Nuno finished with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The Mavericks built a 29-point first half lead with 37 seconds left in the half after a three-point bucket by
Jess Spivey. They grew their lead to 42 points with 3:59 to go in the second half after a free-throw by
Clay Verk.
Exactly half of the Mavericks 108 points came in the paint while also shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the three-point line in the first half.
The win was the first in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
The Mavericks will close out the tournament on Saturday against Midland University at 5pm.
