GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks (6-1-2, 4-0-2 RMAC) will travel to Regis University and University of Colorado Colorado Springs this weekend to continue Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games. On Friday the Mavericks will kickoff against Regis University at 3pm at the Regis Match Pitch and face UCCS on Sunday at 2:30 pm on the Mountain Lion Field.
Entering this weekend the Mavericks are in second place in the RMAC standings. The Mavericks are one of two teams with zero losses. Colorado School of Mines sits at the top with a 5-0-1 conference record and Fort Lewis and Westminster sit behind the Mavericks with 4-1-1 records.
The Mavericks are recently coming off a 1-0-1 weekend where they defeated Dixie State and tied with Westminster College. After the weekend senior Brendan Brown was named the RMAC Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time this season.
Over the weekend Brown recorded 13 saves and a 0.45 goals against average. In the 1-0 win against Dixie State Brown recorded three saves in the final two minutes to secure the win including a penalty kick save.
The Mavericks committed a foul with less than two minutes remaining that resulted in a Trailblazer penalty kick. Brown stopped Moises Medina's original shot however the Mavs were guilty of a violation, which allowed for a retake by Idris Alabi, Brown also came up with a save on that to secure the Maverick win.
Against Westminster Brown recorded four saves including one in overtime to stop the Griffins from a game winning goal.
Ramses Atahualpa and Alex Fronapfel lead the Mavericks with six points each. Atahualpa has a team high four assists and Fronapfel has a team high three goals. Along with Fronafel two other Mavericks have multiple goals this season. Over the past weekend Tristan Widic and Lawan Abary recorded goals.
Widic's second goal of the season was recorded as the game winning goal against Dixie State just one minute after he subbed in for the first time that match. Against Westminster Abary netted his second goal of the season to send the game into overtime where the game settled 1-1.
Noah Rosenberg and Chris Boyd who lead the Maverick defense are limiting opponents to just 10 shots per game which is five under the Mavericks' offense. Opponents are averaging 0.78 goals per game against the Mavericks who are averaging 1.56 goals per game.
Scouting the Rangers
With a 4-2-0 conference record the Rangers are currently in sixth place among RMAC opponents. Outside of conference the Rangers went 1-2-1 and enter this Fridays match with a 5-4-1 overall record.
The Rangers are averaging 2.20 goals per game and limiting their opponents to 1.30 goals. Parker Klein leads the team with six goals. Ten Rangers have recorded goals this season and seven of them have more than one goal. In the net Tim Dolan has played every minute and has recorded 31 saves and a 1.26 goals against average.
Scouting the Mountain Lions
The Mountain Lions are 1-5-0 in RMAC play and 2-6-1 overall. They are getting outscored by opponents 21-13 this season and allowing 2.33 goals per game.
Alex VonHolle ranks first in the RMAC in shots on goal per game (1.78) and second in shots on goal (16). He has four goals this season which leads the team. Two other players have two goals and four other players have recorded a goal.
In the net, Scott Jensen has played every minute for the Mountain Lions and recorded a 2.25 goals against average and 33 saves.
A Look Ahead
The Mavs will stay on the road for games against Westminster and Dixie State on October 18 and 20, respectively. On October 18 at 4 pm the Mavericks will play Westminster at the Dumke Field and on October 20 they will kickoff against Dixie State at 1:30 pm.
