SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The No. 23 Colorado Mesa wrestling team split a pair of duals on Friday afternoon at The Swamp on the campus of San Francisco State University. The Mavericks defeated non-conference foe Minnesota State Moorhead and fell to RMAC affiliate San Francisco State in the night cap.
 
The Mavericks dropped just two bouts in the 36-12 win over the Dragons in their first dual of the New Year. They earned two pins, a tech fall, a major decision, an injury default win and three decisions in the dual.
 
Junior Payton Tawater earned the Mavericks first pin at 157 pounds at the 1:24 mark of the first period. The Arvada native moved to 9-3 on the season with the pin over Dragon Braydon Ortloff and was the fourth win in a string of eight straight wins in the dual.
 
Redshirt freshman Nolan Krone earned the Mavericks second pin with one at 184 pounds over Evan Foster at 2:09 of the first period.
 
Conversely, in the night match, Colorado Mesa managed to only win three of the 10 bouts in a 30-12 loss to the Gators.
 
Eduardo Penha earned a pin over Christian Ramos at the 2:13 mark of the first period while teammates Seth Latham and Hunter Mooring each won by decision at 174 pounds and 285 pounds respectively.
 
Colorado Mesa will compete in the Menlo Open on Saturday before heading back to the mountains for action next week in Brownson Arena.
