Mavericks Fall to Skyhawks in Thriller

DURANGO, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker 79-76 to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival Fort Lewis at Whalen Gymnasium on Saturday evening.

With 45 seconds left in the game, Tommy Nuno made a running jumper to tie the game at 76-76. Fort Lewis countered with a running underhand scoop layin by Alex Semadeni to make it 78-76 Skyhawks with 29 seconds remaining.

Colorado Mesa had a pair of looks but a missed jumper and another missed three-pointer gave Fort Lewis the ball with four seconds left in the game. Skyhawk Will Whitman made just 1-of-2 free throws leaving the door open for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks missed the last second shot giving Fort Lewis the win.

Nuno finished with a game-high 17 points on 6-for-16 shooting from the field. He tied for the team lead with eight rebounds and handed out seven assists. The junior added three steals.

Connor Nichols and Damon Dubots each added 16 points while Michael Skinner poured in 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

The Mavericks fell to 1-4 on the road when shooting below 50 percent from the field, finishing at 43.8 percent and just 22 percent from the three-point line.

The Mavericks record falls to 12-5 on the season and 7-4 in the RMAC while Fort Lewis improved to 9-8 on the season and 4-7 in the conference.

Colorado Mesa will return home for four straight home games beginning on Friday against Dixie State followed by a Saturday tilt with Westminster.
