ALAMOSA, Colo. – Junior
Jess Spivey buried a career-high eight three-pointers to help lead Colorado Mesa to a 79-74 win over the Adams State Grizzlies on Friday evening in Plachy Hall in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's hoops action.
Spivey's career night came at the perfect time as the normal crew of Maverick scorers were held in check. The Manteca, Calif. native scored a season best 26 points and went off in the second half, scoring 17 points and hitting 5-of-8 three-point attempts. He made his first six three-point attempts and helped the Mavericks overcome a 10-point first half deficit.
Tonight's win was the first for the Mavericks when they shot less than 50 percent from the field. Colorado Mesa shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the field but actually shot a higher percentage from three at 47.6 percent (10-of-21).
The Mavericks biggest lead of the game was seven which came at the 3:11 mark of the second half after Spivey's final three-pointer of the night to make it 73-66.
Tommy Nuno finished the night with 12 points and a team-high eight assists while
Connor Nichols finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Mavericks eclipsed their win total from last year moving to 12-4 on the season and 7-3 in the conference while Adams State falls to 4-11 on the season and 4-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Colorado Mesa will head to Durango for a battle with rival Fort Lewis on Saturday at 7:30pm. The Skyhawks were 72-63 winners over Western Colorado on Friday night at Whalen Gymnasium.
