GUNNISON, Colo. – A group of six Colorado Mesa wrestlers competed at the Western Open on Friday afternoon in Mountaineer Fieldhouse. The Mavericks finished with one champion and some nice performances by some of the backup wrestlers.
At 141 pounds,
Dylan Keeney was crowned the champion after going 3-0 in the round robin. Keeney defeated three Western wrestlers, two by pin and one by major decision. The wins were the first of the year for the Payson, Ariz. native.
Freshman
Christian Elmore picked up his first collegiate win at 125 pounds in the Open. Elmore defeated Western's Seth Lisowski by pin at 1:46 in the first period.
Kyle Jennings placed third at 285 pounds after finishing 3-2 in the round robin tournament. The Shingle Springs, Calif. native had a pair of wins via pin and a 3-2 decision victory.
Colorado Mesa will head out for four duals in Nebraska next week. They will dual Chadron State on Thursday in Rushville, Neb. before heading to Kearney for the Midwest Duals.
