Mavs give Fleming 250th win in dominating, balanced fashion

CMU hits season-best .365 in 3-set sweep of CSU-Pueblo

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Volleyball team had attackers coming from everywhere in a dominating 3-set sweep of visiting Colorado State University-Pueblo in the Mavericks' Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener on Friday night in Brownson Arena.

The Mavericks hit .365 as a team and had a 44-21 edge in total kills as five different Mavs put down eight or nine kills each in the 25-10, 25-9, 25-16 victory.

In the process, the Mavs gave head coach Dave Fleming his 250th career win.  The victory was also their fourth straight and upped their record to 6-3 on the year.  The Mavericks have also won ten of their last 11 sets.

CSU-Pueblo fell to 2-8 overall and have not defeated the Mavericks since 2013, a span of seven straight matches.

Mesa was incredibly balanced as Kasie Gilfert, who hit .571 with just one error on 14 swings, Natalee Todd, who hit .500, and Katie Scherr had nine kills each.  Meanwhile, Camille Smith, who hit .615 on an errorless 13 attempts, and MacKenzie Edwards had eight kills each.

Todd had seven kills in the second set alone and was involved in four of the Mavericks' six blocks.  She also had three of CMU's seven service aces as did Scherr.

Defensively, the Mavericks had a 57-37 edge in total digs as Edwards and Taylor Woods finished with 13 each.  They also held the ThunderWolves to just .073 hitting.

Starting setter Ara Norwood finished with 26 assists while freshman Hannah Bokal chipped in 11 as the other orchestrator of the Mavericks' 6-2 offense.

The Mavericks were absolutely dominant in the first two sets as they hit .367 and .471, respectively building big early leads in both.

CMU led 3-0 and 10-2 in the first set before three straight Scherr service aces gave the Mavericks a 15-4 lead which gradually grew to the final margin of 15 points as the ThunderWolves managed to score back-to-back points just twice in the entire set.

The second set was even more lop-sided as Gilfert put down a kill on the opening point before Todd took over with five kills in six rallies with Edwards at the service line.  Scherr and Gilfert also added kills in the spurt as the Mavericks jumped out to a 9-0 lead.

Mesa then used another 5-0 run with Norwood at the service line to extend the lead to 19-6 as they cruised into the intermission up two sets.

In the third, the Mavericks used a 7-2 spurt to seize control and a 12-8 lead.  The ThunderWolves, who were held to .027 hitting in the third set, would get no closer than three the rest of the way.
Sarah Vang led the Pack with six kills.

The Mavericks will remain at home for their next two matches facing the New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls on Saturday and Western State Colorado University on Tuesday.  Highlands claimed a 25-16, 25-20, 26-24 win over the Mountaineers in Gunnison on Friday and are 3-6 overall and 1-0 in the RMAC.  Western is 1-8 (0-1 RMAC) heading into a Saturday night home tilt with CSU-Pueblo.
