GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— After a very emotional win over nationally-ranked Regis University on Friday night, it would have been easy for the Colorado Mesa University volleyball team to have a let-down just 21 hours later against Colorado Christian University
Other than a late second-set wobble, the Mavericks did just the opposite as they put forth a very business-like and convincing effort in a 25-15, 28-26, 25-9 victory over the Cougars to claim their fourth straight and 11
th win in the last 12 matches on Saturday afternoon in Brownson Arena.
The Mavericks, who are now 7-0 at home this season, hit .340 as a team and finished with a 12-1 advantage in blocks and an 8-3 edge in service aces to improve to 13-4 overall and to 8-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
The Cougars slipped to 7-11 overall and to 5-4 in the RMAC as they were held to a .055 attack percentage.
Maverick sophomore
Kasie Gilfert, who had a career-high 26 kills in Friday night's win, was again on her game as he put down 16 more in Saturday's win without committing a hitting error. She hit .667 and added a pair of block assists to finish the weekend with 42 kills and just one hitting error.
Meanwhile, redshirt sophomore hitter
Allison Smith started for the first time in nearly two years, and finished with nine kills, five digs and four blocks while
Camille Smith finished with eight kills, six digs, a match-high six blocks, including two solos, and hit .438.
That trio combined for 33 of the Mavericks' 42 total kills, three more than the Cougars' entire team.
Defensively,
Taylor Woods racked up 13 of CMU's 49 digs.
Maverick setters
Ara Norwood and
Samantha Ritter also combined for 35 assists and 14 digs while
Natalee Todd finished with four blocks to aid the cause.
Gilfert connected for kills on each of her first 11 swings finishing the first set with six kills alone as the Mavericks hit an impressive .565 as a team in the opening frame.
The Mavericks used an early 6-0 run with Todd at the service line to seize control of the set and then went up by 10 points (21-11) on another 5-0 run spurt that featured a Gilfert kill, a
Camille Smith solo block and a Ritter service aces to cruise to the win.
The Mavericks the jumped out to another big lead (8-2) in the second set before the Cougars gradually fought back to tie the set at 15 and again at 16 and then once again at 20 after an exchange of 4-0 runs.
The Mavericks would then use another 3-0 run with back-to-back kills by
Allison Smith and a block by her and Todd to seize apparent control at 23-20. However, the Cougars answered right back with a 3-0 run of their own.
The Cougars then scored two of the next three points to take a 25-24 lead and earn a set point, which was quickly erased by a Gilfert kill.
The teams then exchanged points to make it 26-26 before a costly serving error and blocking error gave the Mavericks the second set.
CMU then simply rolled from the start of the third set scoring the first four and 12 of the first 14 points to take a 12-2 lead. They never looked back and led by as many as 15 points (22-7) while hitting .357 in the final frame to close out the win.
The Mavericks will now go on the road for their next two matches playing at South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State next weekend before returning for their final two regular season home matches on Oct. 12 and 13 against Dixie State and Westminster, respectively.
This Friday's match at South Dakota Mines in Rapid City is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
