Gilfert, Mavs dominate Eagles to pick up 10th win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Sophomore Kasie Gilfert put down a career-high 20 kills, including numerous inside the 10-foot line, while hitting an impressive .667 to lead dominating Colorado Mesa University effort in a 25-20, 25-14, 25-16 sweep of the visiting Chadron State College Eagles on Friday night in a packed Brownson Arena.

The Mavericks, who had a 54-30 advantage in total kills, also received another dozen kills from junior middle blocker Camille Smith, who hit. 476, and an 11-kill, 12-dig double-double from senior outside hitter MacKenzie Edwards, who hit .455, as they improved to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the RMAC.

CMU hit .328 as a team as setters Ara Norwood, who had 26, and Samantha Ritter, who had 22, combined for 48 of the Mavericks' 53 assists.  Ritter also had 10 digs to record her first double-double of the season while Norwood finished with eight.

Maverick senior libero Taylor Woods was also in double-figures with 11 digs.

Chadron State, held to a .117 team attack percentage, fell to 2-11 overall and to 0-5 in the RMAC and have not defeated the Mavericks since 1995.

Gilfert connected for kills on each of her first 11 swings, including all eight in the first set and added five in the second and seven more in the third, committing just two hitting errors on 27 attempts.

The Mavericks jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opening set before a barrage of five consecutive combined hitting errors on both sides made it 10-5.

Ashton Reese, who had seven kills and three blocks while hitting .385, then combined with Smith for a block as the Mavericks went on a 3-1 run to build a 13-6 edge.

The Mavericks never trailed by fewer than four for the rest of the set.

The Eagles would get out to 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 leads in the second set before the Mavericks scored 14 of the next 19 points to build a commanding 17-9 lead, which proved to be more than enough.

The Mavericks never trailed in the third set and jumped out to a 10-3 lead after a 7-0 run.  Gilfert triggered that spurt, which also featured a pair of Smith blocks.

Fittingly, Gilfert would go on to set up match point with a straight-down smash and then finished the match off with another kill from the middle.

The Mavericks have now won all four of their home matches and have won eight of their last nine matches overall.  They will put those marks on the line on Saturday evening when they face the MSU Denver Roadrunners in a key RMAC clash.  The Roadrunners won a 3-0 decision at Western State Colorado University in Gunnison on Friday evening to improve to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in the RMAC.

Saturday's match will begin at 5 p.m. and will be the 400th career match for 14th year Maverick Coach Dave Fleming.
