Mavericks sail over Griffins to set up Saturday showdown with Dixie State

Gilfert paces Mavs with 10 kills

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH— Kasie Gilfert put down a match-high 13 kills while hitting at a .478 clip as the Colorado Mesa University Volleyball team once again played stellar defense en-route to a convincing 25-17, 25-18, 25-10 3-set sweep of the Westminster College Griffins on Friday night here in the Behnken Field House.

The Mavericks also received eight kills from Katie Scherr and another six from Natalee Todd, who hit an errorless .600, and Katie Scherr and held the Griffins to a .045 team hitting percentage as they won their seventh straight match while improving to 9-3 overall and to 4-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Todd and Camille Smith also added three blocks each as the Maverick recorded seven blocks.  The Mavericks also capitalized on 12 other Griffin hitting errors throughout the short night, which lasted just 80 minutes.

Gilfert had six kills in the first set and added five more in the second, hitting .526 in the opening two frames.

Elsewhere, Taylor Woods and MacKenzie Edwards led all other players with 10 digs while Ara Norwood doled out 22 assists.  Samantha Ritter added 12 assists and six digs.

With the victory, the Mavericks maintained a share of the RMAC lead with No. 25 Colorado School of Mines and also set up a Saturday afternoon showdown with Dixie State University, 3-1 winners over Western State Colorado University.  The Trailblazers improved to 8-2 overall and to 3-0 in the RMAC with that win, their third straight and eighth in the last nine.

First serve in St. George is slated for 3 p.m.
