GRAND JUNCTION, Colo - The CMU Men's Rugby team recently competed in the Rocky Mountain Rugby Tournament in Colorado Springs, CO at the Air Force Academy. The tournament was a National 7s qualifier. The men played very well in Pool play. Their first match was a win against University of New Mexico Lobos. The score was 21-7. Their second match was against a strong Northern Colorado side and it ended in a 33-5 loss. They did bounce back however, and beat their last pool play opponent a combined AirForce/Montana team 38-0.
The team's level of play advanced them to the semi-finals as the No.2 team in their pool. n their semi-final match they faced a formidable Montana State team but were unable to secure the win.The game ended with a score of 17-7.
Head Coach Mackenzie Lewis expressed pride in the team and their success this season. "I'm very proud of these guys, rising above multiple injuries that have caused a shortage of players, they have stayed focused and dedicated and their growth is just beginning to shine. Big things are coming for this young squad. (4 freshmen, 4 Sophomores, 2 Juniors and 2 that will be 5th year seniors next fall) In addition to our kiddos coming back from injury, kiddos re-becoming eligible, returning CMU students and an influx of 5 or so recruits."
