GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Beach Volleyball team went undefeated and dropped just one official set while posting convincing 5-0 victories over both the Colorado College Club Team and Colorado Northwestern Community College on Saturday in the Mavericks' final two duals of the 2018 season on Saturday.
Â
The victories, which came on their only home date of the campaign, allowed the Mavericks to finish the year 5-15 in duals. All but one of their losses this year were to NCAA Division I foes, including six nationally-ranked foes.
Â
In the morning match against the Tigers, made up of mostly indoor players from the perennial NCAA Division III contenders, the Mavericks won five of the six matches, including an exhibition, in straight sets.
Impressively, the Mavericks also held the Tigers to single-digits in seven different sets.
Â
In the No. 1 match,
Katie Scherr and
Taylor Woods won 21-9 over Rachel Krutz and Allie Freeburg.Â
Megan Gianinetti and
Hana Peterman were almost as dominant winning 21-9, 21-4 over Jilly Gibbs and Jade Odom.
Â
Meanwhile,
Kasie Gilfert and
Samantha Ritter defeated Haley Harris and Alex Nickerson, 21-12, 21-18 in the No. 3 match while
Ara Norwood and
Natalee Todd blasted Malone DeYoung and Areille Link, 21-6, 21-3 in the No. 5 match.
Â
Hailey Crane and
Lindy Dixon also won in come-from-behind fashion over Caitlin Laurence and Marguerite Spaethling in the No. 4 match. After dropping the first set, 21-18, Crane and Dixon posted 21-10 and 15-10 second and third set wins.
Â
Meanwhile,
Ashton Reese and
Kassidy Day defeated DeYoung and Link by 21-12 and 21-7 scores in an exhibition match.
Â
After a brief lightning delay, the Mavericks then took out Colorado Northwestern in equally as dominant of fashion.
Â
Scherr and Woods won 21-9, 21-14 over Marta Ellsworth and Eleasan Marshall while Peterman and Gianinetti were victorious by 21-13 and 21-6 margins over Karli Baker and Brianna Duke.
Â
Gilfert and Ritter won by even more lop-sided margins (21-6, 21-7), defeating Faith Crabb and Kaylee Wilcox.
Â
The Spartans did not field No. 4 or 5 pairings, which gave the Mavericks the other two points by default.
Â
To allow for more matches, the Mavericks also squared off with a pair of CC teams in the afternoon sessions.Â
Norwood and Todd needed three sets to defeat Laurence and Spaethling, 21-8, 17-21, 15-11 while
Julia Baskin and
Rachael Perrine claimed a 21-8, 21-10 victory over Gibbs and Odom.
