It was a big afternoon for Colorado Mesa University. Not only was it senior day for eight Mavericks, but it was also a chance for the team to clinch its third straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) regular season title. The only team standing in their way was the Thunderwolves from Pueblo. However, CMU was not going to let this chance get away from them as they steamrolled their way to a 27-8 victory.
Prior to the start of the game,
Scott Foster,
Jayden Campbell,
Connor Larrick,
Austin Cromwell,
Calen Ketcham,
Trey Thurmond,
Reece Callies and
Ky Reinhardt were honored for their senior day. Then those eight seniors put on a show for those who were in attendance. The Mavericks opened the game scoring five times in less than seven minutes of game action to take a 5-0 lead. They would score four more times to close out the first quarter and take a 9-1 lead into the second.
It didn't get any better for CSU-Pueblo (CSUP) moving forward. In the second quarter the Mavericks went on to score seven more times to take a 16-2 lead into the locker room. To open up the third quarter, CMU scored five in a row to increase their lead all the way up to 19. CSUPÂ tried to cut that lead down in the fourth by scoring five times, but the Mavericks did them one better with six in the quarter to win the game by 19 points.
Twenty seven goals is the second most they have put up on any opponent this season (they scored an NCAA record 33 against Johnson & Wales University), and it is the most they have scored against an RMACÂ opponent in the program's history.
CMU's offense put up 81 total shots on the afternoon, while CSUPÂ was only able to notch 27. The Mavericks were also a perfect 24-24 in clear attempts on the afternoon.
The Seniors made their final regular season home game one to remember, which nearly all eight finishing with points on the afternoon. Foster finished with two, Campbell had four, Ketcham had three and Callies finished with a game high five points thanks to a hat trick and two assists.
Remi Reeves got himself another win on the season, finishing with only two goals allowed and three saves on the day.
CMU plays one final regular season game against Westminster on Friday before coming home to host the RMACÂ tournament. The Mavericks are looking to become perfect on the season in conference play for the first time in program history with a win against the Griffins.
