Colorado Mesa University had an opportunity to clinch at least a share of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) regular season title with a win against Adams State University (ASU) on Friday night. And the Mavericks did just that with a dominant 14-4 victory over the visiting Grizzlies.
It was a slow start for both teams in the first quarter, but the Mavericks were finally able to end the stand still at the 5:47 mark thanks to
Jayden Campbell's 13th goal of the season.
Scott Foster would add another score at the end of the quarter to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead heading into the second. CMU would score the next four goals to take a 6-0 lead at the beginning of the third quarter.
The Grizzlies were able to cut the lead down to four with two quick scores, but the Mavericks responded in the highest of manners. They scored eight of the next nine goals to take a 14-3 lead towards the end of the fourth quarter. A last minute goal by the Grizzlies cut the final deficit down to 10.
CMU dominated the offensive end of the field all night long. The Mavericks outshot the Grizzlies by a final of 60-27.
Michael Marino was dominate in the faceoffs for the Mavericks, helping CMU win 16 of the 21 on the night.
Despite the high number of shots, it was an ugly affair as well from both teams. The rain led to 53 turnovers committed combined on the night, with the Grizzlies finishing with 30.
Calen Ketcham and Foster were the leading goal scorers on the night, both finishing with hat tricks to their names.
Reece Callies finished as the high point getter for the Mavericks with five on the night.
Remi Reeves played a majority of the game, and got his ninth win of the season. He finished the night with eight saves on two goals allowed.
Next up for the Mavericks is a matchup against CSU-Pueblo on Sunday. It will be senior night for the Mavericks in that game as well. Game timie is set for 1 p.m.
