It wasn't looking great for the Mavericks after the first quarter of action on Tuesday night. Colorado Mesa University was down 1-0 after 15 minutes of action, but they quickly turned the game around in the second and third quarters to cruise to a 13-8 victory.
Â
Rockhurst University (RU) took their second lead of the game with 11:59 to go in the second quarter, when they scored to go up 2-1 on the Mavericks. CMU would then go on to score the next nine goals before Rockhurst managed to stop the bleeding with 5:57 left in the third. CMU was up 10-3 at that point.
Â
Four late goals by the Hawks made the final score closer on paper than it really was. The Mavericks speed and ability to hit the open holes was a key factor on the night. From the 9:47 mark in the second quarter to the 13:21 mark in the fourth, CMU outscored the Hawks 11-1.
Â
Despite that fact, the Hawks finished with more shots on the night than the Mavericks (50-40). They also nearly beat out the Mavericks in the ground balls category (48-42). However, RU finished with 25 turnovers on the night compared to CMU's 16.
Â
Reece Callies was the leading man for the Mavericks on the night, finishing with four goals and an assist. After him it was a well-rounded effort by CMU on the scoring side. Three others finished with two goals apiece, followed by three others with one.
Jack Griffin and
Calen Ketcham were tied for second on the team with four points in the game.
Â
Remi Reeves got his third win of the season. He corralled in seven saves on the day in his 54 minutes of action while only allowing four goals.
Â
The win was the Mavericks first conference win of the season, and their fourth in a row to open up the year. CMU will host Maryville on Thursday for their next game, before going to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on No. 3 University of Tampa in a neutral site affair.
Â
Game time is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday night at Walker Field.
