Mavericks Put Up 33 Goals on Wildcats

Colorado Mesa University's offense was not going to be denied at any point on Friday night against Johnson & Wales University (JWU). The Mavericks' offense erupted for 33 scores on the night (tying a NCAA Division II record) while attempting 101 shots on the night in a 33-0 win over the Wildcats. This was the first ever shutout by the Mavericks in the program's history.

It was all Mavericks from start to finish in this contest. CMU opened up the scoring under a minute into the contest and put up 13 goals in the first quarter alone. The second quarter was much of the same as CMU put up another eight goals in the quarter, to take a 21-0 lead heading into the second half.

Despite the second half being a running clock for the entirety of the remaining two quarters, the Mavericks offense was able to score another 12 goals to get the team up to 33 on the night. JWU had to finish the game with only 10 players available after one had to leave with an injury in the third quarter. The 33-0 win for the Mavericks also broke the NCAA Division II record for margin of victory to add onto the night to remember.

As a team, the Mavericks outshot the Wildcats 101-1 (with the Wildcats lone shot coming in the third quarter). Of those 101 shots, 58 where on goal throughout the contest. Along with that, the team collected 77 ground balls to the Wildcats 17 in the game. CMU also finished the match going 36-36 in face offs for the game.

Michael Marino was a monster when it came to the face offs. He went 30-30 in face offs, which is the second most face off wins in NCAA Division II history, dating back to 2010. He finished a mere one shy of the record.

Twenty different Mavericks scored a goal in the game, but five finished with hat-tricks in the contest. Brandon Wilson (4), Reece Callies (4), Carson Schwark (3), Ethan Gant (3) and Jayden Campbell (3) where the leading goal scorers in the game. Callies also finished with three assists to give him a game high seven points on the night.

Jack Beran and Christian Cherry split time in goal for the Mavericks, with Beran getting the win. Despite giving up 33 goals on the night, Coleton Threlkeld also finished the game with 25 saves for the Wildcats.

CMU will now head out on the road for its next three games, all of which are conference games. Next up is CSU Pueblo on March 6 down in Pueblo. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
