On the Road Again

Colorado Mesa will continue, what seems like their season long, road trip this week with four games in the Land of Enchantment against New Mexico Highlands in Las Vegas, N.M. The Mavericks are 103-40 all-time against the Cowboys that include five matchups in the NCAA Regional Tournament (CMU leads 3-2). CMU is currently riding a 14 game winning streak against Highlands.

Despite their season record, the Cowboys have a trio of dangerous hitters. Eloy Reyna leads the team with a .301 average in 83 at-bats while Carlos Ramirez and Fort Collins' Garrett Hammer lead the team with four home runs a piece.

Highlands possesses one of the best arms in the conference in 6-4 righty Kyle Bledsole. The junior is tied for the RMAC lead in strikeouts with 44 (he is tied with CMU's Kyle Leahy) and leads in innings pitched with 46.0. Expect he and Dakota Pacheco to pitch in the two seven inning games on Friday afternoon. Pacheco comes into the weekend 2-1 with a 5.91 ERA with 30 strikeouts.

LAST WEEKEND
The Mavericks took three of four games from their rivals the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves. They hit .348 as a team in the series and played error free defense. Zach McLeod led the Maverick offense with a .467 average and two home runs. The pitching staff finished with a 4.64 ERA and limited the ThunderWolves to a .264 batting average.

HISTORY WITH THE COWBOYS
Colorado Mesa has won 14 games in a row, and 20 of the past 22, against New Mexico Highlands that dates back to March 22, 2014. The winning streak includes a come-from-behind win in the 2014 NCAA Regional Tournament that the Mavericks went onto win. During the streak, Colorado Mesa has outscored the Cowboys 113-49.

COMPLETE GAMES
Colorado Mesa received a pair of complete game efforts in Saturday's doubleheader with CSU-Pueblo. Reagan Todd fired a complete game in the opener allowing just one run on three hits followed by Chris Ramirez' complete game shutout.

800
During the UCCS series, head coach Chris Hanks won his 800th game as the skipper of Colorado Mesa University. He is the second winningest coach in the RMAC trailing his countrerpart, CSU-Pueblo's Stan Sanchez, by 15 wins entering this weekend's series. Hanks' first win came on February 11, 1999, a 9-6 win over Division I Southern Utah in St. George, Utah.

HIGH FIVE
The Mavericks are 15-0 when they limit their opponents to five runs or less. When they allow six or more, their record drops to 4-6.

ROAD WARRIORS
Colorado Mesa has played 17 of their first 25 games away from Suplizio Field (including two neutral site games). They are 11-6 in those games and have 12 of their final 16 games at home.

EXTRA! EXTRA!
This past weekend, Colorado Mesa played in their fifth extra inning game of the year and remain a perfect 5-0 in those extra inning games. The Mavericks played just four extra inning contests a year ago and went 3-1 in those games.

50
The Mavericks set a program record a year ago by going 50-12 during the 2017 campaign. The 50 wins was a program first and ending up leading the nation in wins. The 50th win may not have come against a grander opponent in top ranked Delta State in the NCAA Division II World Series.

NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Mavericks remain at No. 5 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper coach's poll after the 3-1 series win over CSU-Pueblo. Colorado Mesa moved up one spot to No. 5 in both the Perfect Game Division II poll and the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's poll. CMU remained in the top spot in the NCBWA South Central Region poll garnering all nine first place votes.

THE SKIPPER
Head coach Chris Hanks enters his 20th season guiding the Mavericks and has an impressive 804-333 record, most in program history. In 2017, he guided the Mavericks to their third NCAA Division II World Series and their ninth straight NCAA Tournament. The feat earned him ABCA South Central Region Coach of the year, an honor he has earned three times now.

UP NEXT
Colorado Mesa will head out on the road for the third consecutive weekend. They will head to Golden for RMAC pod weekend where they will play Colorado Christian twice and Colorado School fo Mines twice at Darden Field. The Orediggers currently sit in second place in the RMAC standings.
