It came down to one final possession on Saturday night. The Mavericks and the Griffins were tied at 12 all with just under a minute to play with the ball in the hands of Colorado Mesa University.
Â
After swinging the ball around the net a few times, it ended up in the net of
Reece Callies just below the edge of the box. Callies was able to swing the ball inside to a curling
Calen Ketcham who turned and swung the ball past the Griffins defense to score the game winning goal with 25.7 seconds remaining.
Â
That start of the match went the complete opposite of how the Mavericks were hoping to open up their second conference game of the season. Westminster College (WC) opened up the game on a 7-1 scoring one midway through the second quarter.
Chad Merrick's first goal of the season with 7:51 to go before the half put an end to the bleeding and sent the Mavericks on a dominating stretch.
Â
From the 7:51 mark in the second quarter to the 13:25 mark in the fourth the Mavericks would outscore the Griffins 11-2 to take a 12-9 lead. However, three late transition goals by the Griffins knotted things back up to 12-12 before the game winning score by Ketcham.
Â
Just looking at the stats, the Mavericks look like they won this game handily. CMU outshot the Griffins 59-27 on the day, finishing every quarter with double digit attempts. They also dominated the faceoff circle winning 24 of 28 faceoffs during the match. That was thanks to
Michael Marino who started all 28 of those faceoffs for CMU and was the winner for all 24.
Â
The opening seven goal stretch, and the late transition goals combined with 21 Maverick turnovers and CMU going a mere 1-5 in extra man opportunities kept the Griffins in the game from start to finish.
Â
CMU was led by
Michael Dasch Jr. who finished with four goals on the night. Ketcham was second on the team with two scores and two assits. Seven other Mavericks finished with a score in the match as well.
Â
Remi Reeves began the game in goal before getting pulled at the 19:57 mark after allowing the seven scores. His replacement was
Christian Cherry, who played the remaining 40:03 and allowed only five goals and collected three saves. This was Cherry's third win of the season as he moves to 3-0.
Â
With the win the Mavericks moved to 8-2 on the year and a perfect 2-0 in the conference. Next up for them is a game against Johnson & Wales University on Friday. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Walker Field.
