Colorado Mesa University had their third game this week down in Florida, with Florida Southern College (FSC) as their opponent Saturday afternoon. While the Mavericks were hoping to finish their road trip with a winning record, the Moccasins were able to defend their home field and win 12-9 sending the Mavericks home with a 1-2 record on their Florida road swing.
Â
CMU jumped out of the gate firing, with
Jack Griffin recording a hat trick in the first quarter alone. They found themselves up 3-1 late in the first before a Moccasin goal with 23 seconds remaining cut the lead down to one. FSC would then rally off the first three scores in the second quarter to take their first lead of the game 4-3 and then 5-3. Griffin would then score his fourth of the game followed by a
Kyle O'Brien goal with just under six minutes to go in the half to knot the game back up at five all heading into the break.
Â
The third quarter proved to be the defining one of the game for the Mavericks. CMU would only be able to put together one scoring opportunity in the quarter, compared to the Moccasins four. CMU came into the fourth quarter down 9-6 looking to hold off their second loss in one week. However, it wasn't meant to be as both teams would alternate scoring in the fourth to end the game at 12-9.
Â
Despite losing by three scores, the Mavericks finished with more scoring chances (40-36 in total shots) but were unable to get four more to fall in goal. CMU also finished the game with 15 turnovers, including three in the crucial third quarter.
Â
Griffin led the team with five points on the day, with four goals and one assist. Five other Mavericks each scored once.
Remi Reeves began the game in goal for the first half, finishing with five goals allowed and nine saves.
Jack Beran was chosen for the second, and he received the loss after allowing seven goals and recording four saves.
Â
CMU will now come home for their next two games, with Westminster on tap for March 24. It will be the Mavericks' second RMAC game of the year. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at Walker Field.
