EL CAJON, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University Beach Volleyball team picked up their first two wins of the season defeating San Diego Mesa College 4-1 and Grossmont College 3-1 around a 4-1 setback to Concordia-Irvine in a series of three Tuesday afternoon matches on Grossmont Campus.
 
The Mavericks are now 2-3 on the young season heading into a pair of Wednesday tilts against Cal State Northridge and Missouri State in Northridge.
 
The Mavericks used the same lineup in all three matches as the pairings of No. 1 Taylor Woods and Katie Scherr, No. 4 Hailey Crane and Lindy Dixon and No. 5 Natalee Todd and Ara Norwood each went 2-1 on the day to lead the Mavericks.
 
Against San Diego Mesa, all four of CMU's victories came in straight sets.  All three of the aforementioned pairings were victorious as were Hana Peterman and Megan Gianinetti at No. 2.  They won 23-21, 21-17 over Melissa Pittelkau and Devon Lee.
 
Todd and Norwood were the most dominant in their match as they won 21-16, 21-8 over Sabrina Calcutt and Alina Snyder.
 
Samantha Ritter and Kasie Gilfert were the loan Maverick team to win against Concordia-Irvine.  They claimed a thrilling 21-14, 11-21, 16-14 3-set victory.  Todd and Norwood also took their opponents to three sets.
 
In the finale against the host Griffins, the Mavericks claimed all three of their victories in three sets.  Woods and Scherr came from behind to defeat Felicia Marshall and Khalia Jordan, 12-21, 21-18, 15-9 while Dixon and Crane also came from behind to win in thrilling fashion, 19-21, 21-18, 16-14, over Maiya Lopez and Ashley Goychoochea.
 
Todd and Norwood clinched the victory with a 22-24, 21-16, 15-12 win over Jamie Sakasegawa and Laurie Orbita.
