Hinson homers three times as No. 1 Mavs cruise to 20-0

Surface tosses 1-hit shutout as CMU sweeps road doubleheader, 23-0 and 10-1

LAS VEGAS, N.M.— Playing for the first time as the top-ranked team in the country, the Colorado Mesa University Maverick softball team continued to roll posting 23-0 and 10-1 victories at New Mexico Highlands University on Saturday to move to 20-0 overall and 10-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

The Mavericks hit seven home runs throughout the doubleheader, including three from No. 9 hitter and right fielder Hailey Hinson, and gave up just four combined hits while cranking out 33 of their own.

Meanwhile, McKenzie Surface pitched a 1-hit shutout in the series-opener, ended via the mercy-rule in five innings, and took a no-hitter into the fourth inning of what was her 11th victory and first shutout of the season.  Reigning RMAC Pitcher of the Week Kimbri Herring then allowed just three hits while striking out 10 in the night-cap to improve to 6-0.

The Mavericks scored multiple runs in every inning of the first game, putting up eight in the second and five in both the third and fourth before completing the scoring with a 3-run fifth.

Hinson, who went 3-for-3 in the game, and Kaila Jacobi, who went 4-for-5, each had two home runs in the game.  Jacobi also finished just a single shy of hitting for the cycle as she also tripled and doubled while driving in five runs.

However, she was beat out in that category by AnnMarie Torres, who hit her team-leading eighth bomb of the campaign while driving in six.

Brooke Hodgson also went deep for the sixth time in 2018 and finished 5-for-5 with five runs scored and four RBI in a return to her home state.  The Rio Rancho native and V. Sue Cleveland High School graduate, also had one of CMU's six doubles in the game and added another in the second game to reach a RMAC-leading total of 12 for the year.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Mavericks recorded 13 hits and took a 1-0 lead with a second inning marker when Hodgson singled, stole second and scored on a Torres RBI double.

After Herring struck out the side in the bottom of the second, the Mavericks scored four in the top of the third on a Alexandria Dufour RBI single, a Torres sacrifice fly and a 2-run Cowgirl error.

The Cowgirls (4-14, 0-9 RMAC) then scored their only run on a third-inning homer by Breana Cabrera to cut the gap to 5-1.

However, Hinson delivered a 2-run single as part of a 3-run fifth before the Mavericks tacked on two in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a Zoe Pakes double and Hinson's third homer.

Hinson, who had hit just one previous collegiate home run, went 3-for-4 with four RBI in the second game while Torres and Hodgson doubled as part of their respective 2-for-3 efforts.

The two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday at 11 a.m.
