For the second time this season, Colorado Mesa University was able to knock off the number three team in the nation. This time it was the University of Tampa (UT) while playing in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the Mavericks came away with the narrow 10-9 win.
Â
Coming out of the gate it wasn't looking good for CMU. The Spartans came out firing scoring the first three goals to take a 3-0 lead into the second quarter. In the second quarter the Mavericks were able to get on the scoreboard, thanks to
Calen Ketcham and
Joe Wulforst IV to cut the lead down to 4-2. However, UT was able to score the final two goals of the quarter to push their lead up to four at the half (6-2).
Â
In the second half the game did a 180 and it was the Mavericks turn to take control. Out of the gate CMU scored the first two goals of the third quarter on
Nate Scully and
Reece Callies unassisted scores. UT was able to score two of the next three to take an 8-5 lead with 4:11 to go in the third. However, the Mavericks were not going to roll over. Ketcham scored with 3:31 to play before
Michael Dasch Jr. got his first goal of the game with 30 seconds to play cutting the lead to one (8-7).
Â
The Mavericks offense continued to roll in the fourth quarter with Callies and Ketcham opening up the scoring to take their first lead of the game (9-8) with 10:14 to play in regulation. Two minutes later the Spartans were able to tie the game up. With 4:28 to play, Ketcham would come up clutch once again scoring his fourth goal of the day, and the eventual game winning score for CMU.
Â
CMU was able to overcome several statistic discrepancies to win the game. The Spartans were able to outshoot the Mavericks 36-27 in the game, including 19-11 in the second half. UT was also able to get 21 more ground balls in the matchup (40-19), holding CMU to under six each quarter.
Â
Ketcham was the leader for CMU on the day, finishing with five points. Dasch Jr. and Callies were tied for second with three points each on the afternoon.
Â
With the win the Mavericks remain undefeated on the season, moving to 6-0. Next up CMU will play three games in Florida over the course of five days next week.
