RMAC Opener this Weekend

LAST WEEKEND
Colorado Mesa headed to California for the second time in three weeks to take on sixth-ranked Cal Baptist. The two teams split the four-game series. The Mavericks hit just .209 in the series and had a 4.93 ERA on the mound. 20 players received an at-bat in the series and 14 pitchers saw action on the mound for Colorado Mesa.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
The Mavericks open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action this week when they travel to Lakewood to take on the Colorado Christian Cougars. The Mavericks are 72-6 all-time against CCU, winning the past 21 straight. The Cougars have a good No. 1 on the mound in lefty Bayley Chesterton, a transfer from Riverside CC. Colorado Mesa will also play their final two non-conference games on Sunday and Monday as they will play their fourth PacWest opponent of the season in Fresno Pacific. The two teams have never met previously.

RMAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Colorado Mesa's Zach McLeod was named the RMAC Player of the Week after batting .500 (7-for-14) against No. 6 Cal Baptist. McLeod had two doubles, four runs scored and six runs driven in. The Trabuco Canyon, Calif. native had an on-base percentage of .588 and slugged .643 in the series with the Lancers.

FAVORITE INNINGS
Colorado Mesa has scored the most runs this season in the sixth and eighth innings, scoring 12 runs in both. Their greatest margin has come in the second inning where they are +7 at 8-1. Opponents have socred the most in the eighth inning with 14.

SWISS ARMY KNIFE
Junior Regan Todd came to the Mavericks as a pitcher, tranferring from Pac-12 power Arizona State. While he is slated to start one of the games this weekend on the mound, he is also one of the Mavericks top hitters in terms of power. He leads the Mavericks in home runs and is second in slugging.

THE STAFF
Colorado Mesa posted a 4.93 ERA during the weekend series with the Lancers batting .302 during the series split. Junior AJ Landis continued to impress out of the bullpen pitching 3.1 innings and striking out seven in a relief win in the opener. Tanner Herdt earned a win in relief in game three of the series, pitching 7.1 innings of one run baseball.

50
The Mavericks set a program record a year ago by going 50-12 during the 2017 campaign. The 50 wins was a program first and ending up leading the nation in wins. The 50th win may not have come against a grander opponent in top ranked Delta State in the NCAA Division II World Series.

NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Mavericks are ranked in the top five in all of the major publications. They are ranked No. 4 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, No. 5 by amateur baseball website Perfect Game, and No. 3 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association. D2Baseballnews.com has yet to release their preseason poll. Updated polls are expected out next week.

THE SKIPPER
Head coach Chris Hanks enters his 20th season guiding the Mavericks and has an impressive 796-332 record, most in program history. In 2017, he guided the Mavericks to their third NCAA Division II World Series and their ninth straight NCAA Tournament. The feat earned him ABCA South Central Region Coach of the year, an honor he has earned three times now.

UP NEXT
Colorado Mesa will host their RMAC home opener next weekend at Suplizio Field. They will play host to UCCS on Friday thru Sunday before their bye week during spring break. UCCS is in their second season of existence.
